First elected as Member of Parliament for Sudbury in 1988, Ms. Marleau has served as Vice-Chair of the National Liberal Party Standing Committee on Policy Development and Chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus.
Appointed Health Minister in 1993, Ms. Marleau made a name for herself as a strong advocate and passionate defender of the Canada Health Act. An advocate for older adult justice, Madame Marleau introduced the first-ever Older Adult Justice Act in the House of Commons in May 2003. A tireless voice for Sudbury, she has worked with her colleagues in the Northern Ontario Caucus to strengthen FedNor and to see increases in regional development funding. In February 2004, she introduced a motion in the House of Commons calling on the government to develop a strategy tho haltthe centralization of jobs in larger urban centres and build up communities such as Sudbury instead.
Ms. Marleau first entered politics at the municipal level in Sudbury in 1980, and served two terms as a regional councillor from 1980 to 1985. As Chair of the Finance Committee, she introduced a pay-as-you-go policy that was instrumental in eliminating the debt of the Regional Municipality of Sudbury.
