Info | First elected to the House of Commons in 1968, Charles Caccia has been re-elected in nine subsequent elections.
He is presently the Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. He is also Commissioner for the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development.
He has served on several House of Commons Standing Committees including the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Constitution in 1978.
Between 1969 and 1971, he was Parliamentary Secretary to three Cabinet Ministers.
In 1977-78, he was elected chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus; in 1979, chair of the Canadian Parliamentary Helsinki Group and in 1980, chair of the External Affairs Sub-Committee on the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.
He was appointed Minister of Labour, and on August 12, 1983, Minister of the Environment.
In Opposition, he served as environment critic and established the Parliamentary Centre for Environmentally Sustainable Development. He served as Chair of the Committee on Sustainable Development of the National Liberal Caucus and member of the Priority and Planning Committee of Caucus. In 1985 UNEP, the United Nations Environment Program, awarded him the Global 500 award.
Charles Caccia was educated in Milan where he completed high school at the Liceo Scientifico Vittorio Veneto. He graduated in Forestry Economics at the University of Vienna in 1954.
