Info | First elected to the House of Commons in 1993, Sarkis Assadourian was elected in the newly created riding of Brampton Centre in 1997 and re-elected in November 2000.
In January 2003, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade and its sub-Committee on Human Rights and International Development.
During his political career, he has been a member of the following committes: sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade; Environment; Official Languages; Human Rights and the Status of Persons with Disabilities; and vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.
He was also member of Canada-Portugal, Canada-Baltic Friendship Groups, executive member for the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association, the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association and the International Parliamentary Group.
Prior to his election, Mr. Assadourian was Executive Director of the Armenian Community Centre. He also has an impressive record of community activity, serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Armenian Community Centre, Treasurer of Willowdale Community Legal Services, and as a successful fund-raiser with the Heart and Lung Association and the Arthritis Society. His extensive voluntarism was acknowledged in 1989 when he received an Ontario Voluntary Service Award.
Mr. Assadourian and his wife Zaza have four children.
