Dennis Gruending was elected as MP for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar in a by-election on November 15, 1999. He is the NDP caucus critic for the Environment and for International Development.

He was raised in St. Benedict, a small farming village near Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and completed high school at St. Peter's College in Muenster. He holds an Honours degree in English literature from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters degree in journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa.

Dennis has worked for three Canadian newspapers as a writer, and for the CBC, as a commentator, researcher, producer and reporter. From 1985 to 1989, Dennis was the co-host of CBC Radio's Morning Edition, heard throughout Saskatchewan.

He has written four books, including biographies of Supreme Court Judge Emmett Hall andof Allan Blakeney, former Premier of Saskatchewan.

Dennis spent four years as the director of information for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in Ottawa.

He has travelled extensively in Latin America and in 1996, spent time in Viet Nam, providing training in television production to farm extension technicians in the Mekong delta.

Dennis has been a Saskatchewan branch vice-president of ACTRA, the Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artists. He is a member of the Saskatchewan Writer's Guild, and the Writer's Union of Canada, where he has twice been a member of the national council.

Dennis is married to Martha Wiebe, who was raised in Warman, Saskatchewan. They live in Saskatoon with their daughters, Maria and Anna.
