Background:
Brett Whiteleys election to State Parliament followed more than two decades of community service in the Burnie region.
Aside from organising the annual Carols by Candlelight service for more than 20 years, Brett has had a long association with church and community affairs and headed a team of local business and community leaders established following the closure of Summit Industries a workplace for people with disabilities and the Amcor pulp mill.
Brett - a Burnie City Council Tasmania Day award recipient in 1997 for community service - also served as an alderman of the City of Burnie between 1999 and 2002, resigning following his election to the House of Assembly.
He believes the State Government has a responsibility to prioritise its spending to ensure that the basic requirements of health, education and law and order are met first.
According to Brett the people of his electorate often questioned the State Governments spending priorities.
In my travels around the electorate, people are often aghast at the lack of funding for fundamental community services yet they see the State Government able to find funds for other programs that are commonly perceived to be of lesser benefit, he said.
