Info | GREENE, George Woodward, a Representative from New York; born in Mount Hope, Orange County, N.Y., July 4, 1831; pursued classical studies and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia; taught school; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1860 and commenced practice in Goshen, N.Y.; school commissioner for Orange County; judge of the Orange County Courts 1861-1864; presented credentials as a Democratic Member-elect to the Forty-first Congress and served from March 4, 1869, to February 17, 1870, when he was succeeded by Charles H. Van Wyck, who contested his election; member of the State assembly 1885-1888; died in New York City July 21, 1895; interment in “The Plains” Cemetery, Otisville, N.Y.
