Info | VOORHIS, Charles Henry, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Spring Valley, Bergen County, N.J., March 13, 1833; attended the district schools; was graduated from Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N.J., in 1853; moved to Jersey City; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced practice in Jersey City, N.J.; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864; presiding judge of Bergen County, N.J., in 1868 and 1869; one of the organizers of the Hackensack Improvement Commission in 1869 and also of the Hackensack Academy; organized and served as first president of the Hackensack Water Co. in 1873; became interested in banking; elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1881); was not a candidate for reelection in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress; resumed his former business pursuits; died in Jersey City, N.J., April 15, 1896; interment in New York Cemetery, Hackensack, Bergen County, N.J.
