InfoHILL, John, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Catskill, Greene County, N.Y., June 10, 1821; attended private schools; employed as a bank clerk and learned bookkeeping in Catskill, N.Y.; moved to Boonton, N.J., in 1845; was employed as a bookkeeper and paymaster and later engaged in mercantile pursuits; served as postmaster from November 1849 to May 1853; member of the township committee 1852-1856 and 1863-1867; justice of the peace 1856-1861; member of the State house of assembly in 1861, 1862, and 1866, serving as speaker during the last year; unsuccessful candidate for election to the State senate in 1862; took an active part in raising troops during the Civil War; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth, Forty-first, and Forty-second Congresses (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1873); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Interior (Forty-second Congress); resumed mercantile pursuits until 1876, when he retired; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1868; member of the State senate 1875-1877; elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1881-March 3, 1883); was not a candidate for renomination in 1882; died in Boonton, N.J., July 24, 1884; interment in Boonton Cemetery.
