Info | Shelly Yachimovich is one of Israel’s foremost drivers of social reform, having moved on from a career as one of Israel’s most prominent broadcast journalists to enter the Knesset in 2006.
Yachimovich played a crucial role in reinvigorating the Labour party as its chair from 2011 to 2013 – the first woman to lead the party since Golda Meir – recruiting thousands of young people to support the party. She was first elected to the Knesset in 2008, serving as a prominent member of the Knesset Finance Committee and State Control Committee. By 2008, she was heading the Committee for Children’s rights. In the following Knesset, she served as chair of the Ethics Committee and as a member of the Finance, Labor, Welfare, and Health Committees. She also established herself as a champion of LGBTQ rights.
Before entering politics Shelly Yachimovich became a household name presenting Channel 2’s flagship political talk show Meet the Press. Before that she broadcast for seven years on the popular Hakol Diburim (It’s All Talk) radio show, where she developed a following based on her inspiring insights on social issues.
Yachimovich was born in Kfar Saba to Holocaust survivors from Poland in 1960. Her father worked as a construction worker and her mother as a teacher. Yachimovich did her military service as an officer in the Social Workers corps. As a student at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, following her discharge, she quadruple-majored in Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology.
Yachimovich lives in Tel Aviv with her two children.
