| Info | Commissioner Benjamin Graber, an eminent medical doctor who brings his unique experience and compassion for health care issues to the public sector, was elected to the Broward County Commission in November 2000, winning a four-year term on the Broward County Commission. He represents District 3, located in the northwest area of the county.
Born in Kassel, Germany, he emigrated to the United States in 1949 and became a naturalized citizen in 1955. He was raised in the Bronx, New York, and educated in the public school system of New York City, graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School. He received his Bachelors of Liberal Arts Degree from Queens College of the City University of New York in 1970, majoring in behavioral science and pre-medical studies. He went on to receive a Doctor of Medicine degree from Texas Technical University's School of Medicine in 1975. He completed his residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Monmouth Medical Center, an affiliate of the Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1978.
In 1988, Dr. Graber was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, where he distinguished himself during four terms, eventually becoming Deputy Majority Leader of the House. His colleagues elected him vice chair of the Broward Legislative Delegation in 1990 and chair in 1991. In the Legislature, he chaired the Joint Legislative Information Technology Resources Committee, the Health Care Committee, the Subcommittee of Lottery and Gaming Regulated Industries Committee and the Subcommittee on Oversight on Health and Rehabilitative Services.
In the Florida Legislature, Dr. Graber was the prime sponsor of numerous bills including the Enhancement of Development Disabilities Bill, the creation of the Elderly Affairs Department, the creation of the Clean Indoor Air Act, the Health Care Insurance Reform Act of 1993 (national model for Managed Care), the Tobacco Liability Act (which allowed for the settlement of $13 billion for the state) and the Managed Care Reform Act of 1996 (regulating Medicaid and establishing the Children's Medical Services as an alternative service network for Medicaid and Medipass - a primary care program.
Dr. Graber has made a number of presentations throughout the state on health care and contemporary issues and has written extensively for daily newspapers and medical journals. He is a courtesy clinical associate professor at the University of Florida, OB-GYN, and a voluntary clinical associate professor at the University of Miami, Department of OB-GYN.
Among his numerous awards, Dr. Graber was recognized by Kids in Distress (1990) for his service to children; the Florida Chamber of Commerce for his support of business (1992); Broward Community College, Presidential Leadership Award (1992); Representative of the Year Award, ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens); Outstanding Service for Dedication to Humanitarian Ideals, the City of Hope Medical Center, Beckman Research Institute (1994); Representative of the Year Award, Florida Association of Community Health Centers (1994); Legislator of the Year Award (first ever presented), Florida Association of Counties (1994); Broward Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Appreciation Award (1995); the National Council of Jewish Women, Legislative Award (1966); and, University of Florida Recognition Award (1996).
Commissioner Graber lives in Tamarac with his wife, Sandra Alter Graber, M.S., Ed.D. They have three daughters, Mylissa Amy Graber, M.D., Geneen Robyn Graber, Pharm. D., and Cari Danielle Graber, a medical student at Nova Southeastern University.
Elected in November 2000, Commissioner Graber stressed the importance of government reform - a major issue for his term.
