Info | CABELL, George Craighead, a Representative from Virginia; born in Danville, Pittsylvania County, Va., January 25, 1836; attended the Danville Academy, and the law school of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1857; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Danville in 1858; edited the Republican and later the Democratic Appeal in Danville; elected Commonwealth attorney for Danville in September 1858, and served until April 23, 1861, when he volunteered as a private in the Confederate Army; commissioned major in June 1861 and was assigned to the Eighteenth Regiment, Virginia Infantry; promoted to the rank of colonel and served until the close of the Civil War; resumed the practice of his profession; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1887); chairman, Committee on Railways and Canals (Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1886 to the Fiftieth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Danville, Va.; died in Baltimore, Md., June 23, 1906; interment in Green Hill Cemetery, Danville, Va.
