InfoCouncilmember Mitchell was elected to the City Council in October 1999. Mrs. Mitchell is Regional Director of Cancer Control for the American Cancer Society. She received a B.A. degree in Sociology and Education from Lane College and an M.A. in Education Administration from Trevecca Nazarene College. She has also completed post graduate work at the University of Tennessee. Her civic activities include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Leadership Memphis and the Board of Leaders of Christ Missionary Baptist Church, where she is a member. She serves as the City Council liaison to the Center City Commission. Mrs. Mitchell has received numerous awards, including Woman of Wisdom from the Coalition of 100 Black Women 1999 and 2000, Friend of Education MEA Association 2000-01, Henry Logan Starks Community Leadership Award 2001, Maybelline's Shades of Your Community Service Award, 1998 Citizen of the Year from Sigma Gamma Rho, 1992 Mother of the Year from Havenview Junior High, National Teamster Black Caucus Appreciation Award and 1997 Minority Business Advocate of the Year from Med Week. Mrs. Mitchell also served on the Memphis City School Board from 1992 to 1999. She and her husband Ronald E. Mitchell, Sr., have four children: Nakia, Cathryn, Evelyn and Ronald, Jr., and three grandchildren.
