InfoDr. Kenneth T. Whalum, Jr., who was born and reared in Memphis, is a 1978 graduate of Atlanta’s Morehouse College and a 1981 graduate of Philadelphia’s Temple University School of Law. He received his master of divinity degree from the Memphis Theological Seminary. He has been the Pastor of New Olivet Baptist Church since 1999.

Elected to the Memphis Board of Education in 2006, he began his tenure as Commissioner At-Large Position 2 in January of 2007, and serves on the Budget, Policy, Mental Health, and Personnel Committees. Dr. Whalum also serves as the representative for the Memphis City Council and the Council of Urban School Boards,

Commissioner Whalum has been involved in various civic organizations, such as the Memphis Urban League Board of Directors and the Memphis Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. He is a member of the Stellar Awards Gospel Music Academy, the Recording Academy and the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

In 1998, at the request of Mayor Willie W. Herenton, Commissioner Whalum produced the City of Memphis’ official 30th Anniversary Observance of the life and death of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

He often attributes his success to the support of his wife, Sheila. He and his wife are the parents of three sons, Kenneth III, Kortland and Kameron, all graduates of Memphis City Schools.
