OBITUARY OF DANIEL MCGAVIN HANSEN
Daniel M. Hansen, founder of the Independent American Party of Nevada, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in an automobile accident near Winnemucca, Nevada. Hansen was 60 years old, having been born on Jan. 10, 1942. Dan was the son of Oliver F. Hansen, a well known Boy Scout leader in Sparks, and Ruth Holloman Hansen.
Dan was a basketball star at Sparks High School, graduating in 1962 and going on to earn his B.A. in Political Science at the University of Nevada in 1967. Dan married Sharon Corner in 1960, and together they had eight children. He was a successful businessman as proprietor of Scott Roofing and Hansen Enterprises and a partner in H & E Enterprises and Matuzak Masonry, all of Sparks.
Dan is survived by his wife, Luz Helena Salgado Hansen, whom Dan married in August, 2000. He is also survived by his mother, Ruth Hansen, his brothers David, Joel, and Christopher, by his sister Janine Hawkins; and by his children, Ira Daniel Hansen, Gavin Patrick Hansen, Danielle Marie Quirk, Gavin Patrick Hansen, Heidi Ruth Dibb, Sharon E. Armstrong, Patrick Henry Hansen, and Ryan Oliver Hansen. In addition, he is survived by 37 grandchildren, and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces.
Dan was a life member of the Eagle Scout Association, the John Birch Society, The First Christian Fellowship of Eternal Sovereignty, and Gun Owners of America. He was Western States Chairman of the National Constitution Party, former candidate for Governor and Senator, and was a nominee for Vice President of the United States during America's bicentennial year, 1976.
Mr. Hansen served as a little league baseball coach, a Scoutmaster, and was an avid horseman, He was founder and Vice Chairman of the Nevada Committee for Full Statehood, and served as a High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Dan Hansen was a widely known and beloved leader, friend, and family man. His
loyalties to God, Family, and Country defined his life, leading friends and even his
political foes to recognize him as a man of generosity and integrity, and a staunch,
unwavering advocate for the restoration of the United States Constitution. As a dedicated patriot, Dan pledged and gave to his beloved Country his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor.
Visitation will be held at Ross Burke Knoble funeral home at 1538 C Street, Sparks, Nevada, from 6 to 9 pm, Friday, Jan. 25, and funeral services at the Rock Boulevard LDS Chapel at 1 pm on Saturday, Jan 26,2002. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home, or donations to the "Dan Hansen Freedom Memorial Foundation" may be sent to 715 Wright Way, Sparks, Nevada, 89431.
