Info | Glen Argan is a 55-year-old journalist, husband and father of four young girls. He has been the editor of the Western Catholic Reporter, Canada’s largest weekly Church newspaper, for 20 years. He has also worked as a reporter and/or copy editor for the Red Deer Advocate, The Edmonton Journal and the Winnipeg Sun.
He was the founding editor of a monthly advocacy newspaper in Winnipeg called Inner City Voice. In 1988, because of his work with Inner City Voice, he was named Winnipeg’s inner city citizen of the year. He has also won numerous awards for writing, editing and design from the Canadian Church Press.
Glen was born in Winnipeg and raised in Regina where he received all of his schooling and earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science and philosophy from the University of Regina. After that, he earned a master of arts in philosophy at the University of New Brunswick and wrote his thesis on the morality of euthanasia. He taught philosophy and logic for two years at the University of Regina before embarking on his career as a journalist.
Glen and his wife Nora Parker have been residents of the Holyrood neighbourhood since 1991 and their four children -- Natasha, Jennifer, Dominique and Theresa -- attend neighbourhood schools.
Glen is active in affairs in his community and Church. He is currently president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, an organization or more than 30 volunteers which helps meet the emergency food and other needs of low-income people.
He is also president of the Canadian Church Press, the national ecumenical organization of more than 70 Church-based publications. He has served as president of the Toastmasters club at Grant MacEwan College and is the founder of the Gospel Lights Toastmasters Club.
Glen keeps physically fit by walking, working out at the gym, swimming and cycling. He enjoys gardening, reading and composting.
Glen Argan decided to run as a candidate for the Alberta Greens because he believes in a sustainable economy, a sustainable environment and a sustainable social structure. The Green Party’s values and policies represent a positive alternative to the short-sighted obsession with economic growth at all costs that is the trademark of the Alberta Tory government.
Glen supports the Green Party’s call for a moratorium on new tar sands development, not only for environmental reasons, but also because our overheated economy is making it extremely difficult for low- and middle-income people to acquire decent, affordable housing. Unless the province’s economy is brought under control, the current rapid growth will have negative effects for generations to come.
