| Info | Wyatt Moye was born in Greene Co, NC in 1793, one of 4 known children (2 boys/ 2 girls) born to Major William Moye (1762-1796) and Susanna Dupree.
Wyatt grew to be a well-known citizen in Eastern North Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana, making many significant contributions.
He was 31 when he married Martha Adams on March 18, 1824. She was the 20-year old daughter of Archibald Adams and Nancy Sturvidant of Stantonsburg, Wilson Co, NC. Over the next 24 years, Wyatt and Martha lived with their family in Pitt, Greene, Guilford, Forsythe, and Edgecombe counties, NC. She eventually died in 1845.
During this time, Wyatt Moye served as Sheriff in Greene County; served in the NC Senate from Greene County (1829-1834); represented Guilford County in the NC Senate (1835); served in the NC House of Commons from Forsyth County in 1846, and served in the NC Senate from Edgecombe County (1848).
Wyatt Moye is also responsible for the founding of the Town of Wilson, NC. The journal of the Senate of the 1848-49 session of the North Carolina General Assembly shows that on December 20, 1848, Mr. Wyatt Moye, Senator for Edgecombe County, introduced a bill in the Senate to "incorporate Toisnot Depot and Hickory Grove in the County of Edgecombe into a town by the name of Wilson". The bill passed its third reading and was ratified on January 29, 1849.
In the late 1840s, Wyatt left for Mississippi where he established Wyatt Moye & Co, which either owned/operated plantations for wealthy landowners from Eastern North Carolina, including his future son-in-law, William Francis Dancy of Tarboro.
In 1849, Wyatt married for the 2nd time in Columbus, MS to Louisa Tyson May, daughter of Benjamin Tyson May & Penelope Coffield Grimes of Pitt Co, NC, and widow of Gen. Jesse Wegness Speight. He was 56, and she 39, at the nuptials. The marriage lasted 7 years, until Louisa's death in 1856.
In May 1850, his daughter Martha Carolina Moye married William Francis Dancy in Columbus, MS, and soon returned to his mansion in Tarboro, NC. She died just two years into the marriage, in January, 1852.
It is reported that Wyatt Moye spent the remaining 10 years of his life at the Dancy Plantation in St. Mary's Parish, Louisiana, where he died in 1862. He was 69 at the time of his passing. It is presumed the body was sent to Tarboro, NC for burial, as his remains are in Calvary Episcopal Churchyard next to his first wife, and daughters.
