Info | EVELEIGH, Nicholas, a Delegate from South Carolina; born in Charleston, S.C., about 1748; moved with his parents to Bristol, England, about 1755; was educated in England; returned to Charleston, S.C., in 1774; during the Revolutionary War was appointed captain in the Second South Carolina Regiment (Continentals) June 17, 1775; engaged in the battle with the British fleet and forces at Fort Moultrie on June 28, 1776; was promoted to colonel and appointed deputy adjutant general for South Carolina and Georgia on April 3, 1778; resigned August 24, 1778; engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of representatives in 1781; Member of the Continental Congress in 1781 and 1782; member of the State legislative council in 1783; appointed First Comptroller of the United States Treasury on September 11, 1789, and served until his death in Philadelphia, Pa., April 16, 1791; interment probably in Philadelphia.
