InfoBorn October 1, 1976 in St. John’s where Gemma Schlamp-Hickey still lives with her partner Wendolyn. They were married on July 15, 2006.

Gemma graduated from Gonzaga High School in 1994. She worked a variety of positions from 1994 to 1998, but her most notable one was as a Coordinator with Friends and Lobbyists Of the Waterford River (FLOW) where she was awarded the People In Action Scholarship for a documentary she produced on the Waterford River.

Gemma graduated from the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. During university, she was the General Director of LBGT-MUN. She wrote a brief on same-sex marriage and presented it in Halifax to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. She also formed the Religious Studies Society and became President. Gemma was given the title “Amazing Student” by Student Affairs and Services and was nominated for Volunteer of the Year in 2002 for her contributions on campus.

Gemma worked as an Administrator for a family business from 2003 to 2005. In 2004, she created a project for Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador (PPNL) that would provide outreach to marginalized youth. In 2005, she worked as a Coordinator with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Health Centre (NLSHC) and developed a guide for service providers on how to offer support to youth of a minority sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2006, she worked as a Coordinator with the Health Coalition of Newfoundland and Labrador (HCNL) to promote the importance of Medicare. She currently works as a Coordinator with Community Mediation Services (CMS) where she promotes conflict resolution and restorative justice.

Gemma was raised Roman Catholic, but later joined the United Church of Canada to pursue a call to ministry. She was confirmed at Wesley United Church in 2003 where she formed and led the youth group and taught Sunday school. She was also the Chair of the Youth and Young Adults and Outreach Committees as well as a member of the Worship and Sacraments Committee, Church Council and Executive. She is currently their East District representative.

Gemma was the Chair of Newfoundland Gays and Lesbians for Equality (NGALE) from 2003 to 2005. She was a member of both the Executive and Advisory Committees of Canadians for Equal Marriage (CEM) from 2004 until 2006. She was the President of Egale Canada from 2003 until 2007. She orchestrated the provincial equal marriage court challenge and co-led the campaign for equal marriage across the country.

Gemma is currently the Chair of the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador (ACNL) and on the Board of Directors of the St. John’s Status of Women Council (SJSWC) as well as Pflag Canada. She has been a member of the Pride Committee since 2003, a member of the International Women’s Day Committee since 2006 and a member of the Gay Urban Youth Zone (GUYZ) Advisory Committee since 2006.

Gemma is an active advocate for social change and was nominated in 2005 for the Futures In Newfoundland And Labrador Youth (FINALY) Outstanding Youth Award. In 2007, she was nominated for a Memorial University Alumni Tribute award in Outstanding Community Service and the Order of Newfoundland due to her record of community service.

Gemma ran in a recent provincial by-election as the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate in the district of Kilbride and has organized campaigns for people of all political stripes. When she is not working or volunteering, she spends her time writing.
