Info | In 1999, Michael Skelly moved his family to Texas to build a wind energy company. That initial two-man operation would grow into a multi-billion dollar company that by the end of this year will provide enough clean energy to meet the electricity needs of almost a million American homes.
Michael Skelly’s business career has taught him three very important lessons he will take to Congress. First, the key to success is to make sure that every decision today is made with a focus on the future. Second, no project can move forward until teams of people with disparate interests and skills learn to work together. Right now, ideology and partisanship, on the right and left, is preventing people in Washington from working together and getting things done. Michael Skelly will work with Democrats and Republicans to find common ground and move the country forward. Finally, the third lesson Michael brings from his business experience is that every organization must live within its means while investing in the future. That’s why he will fight to balance the federal budget while making it a priority to invest this nation’s money in projects that have a return, such as education and infrastructure.
Houston was vital to the success of Michael Skelly’s company. According to Michael Skelly, “Houston is America fully concentrated – America at its best. You can show up here with not much but a good idea, a willingness to put in the long hours, and people don’t care where you’re from, they just care where you are headed. Michael Skelly believes Houston, Texas is a place of tremendous opportunity. He wants to bring Houston’s energy, Houston’s can-do attitude, and Houston’s team spirit to Congress.
Michael Skelly’s family came to this country in 1963 on the S.S. America. His father had only $200 in his pockets. The Skelly family believed that if you worked hard, played by the rules, and got a good education, you could succeed in life. So Michael Skelly studied hard in high school and went to college at Notre Dame.
About that experience, he says, "What mattered to me most about Notre Dame was that it’s a university that teaches strong values about how one should conduct oneself in the world, and that young people in particular need to look beyond themselves and think about the society at large." After serving in the Peace Corps, Michael Skelly went to Harvard Business School and earned a business degree.
Michael Skelly serves on Mayor White’s Green Building Advisory Committee, is a longtime member of the board of the American Wind Energy Association, and has served on the boards of several other nonprofits and companies. He lives in West University Place with his wife, Anne, and their three children, ages 15, 13, and 11. The Skelly family attends St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
