Info | Yens grew up on a small family farm near Cut Knife. Being raised and working every summer on the farm, he understands the importance of individual initiative, hard work, and cooperating with others to build lasting legacies. Yens eventually earned his law degree, not just with his own efforts but also with the support of his family and publicly funded student loans. Yens is now a partner at Balfour Moss LLP, where he has practiced law for more than a decade. His practice involves advising people and small and mid-sized businesses in the areas of estate planning, bankruptcy and insolvency, real estate and agricultural law.
In 2007, Yens was nominated as the NDP candidate in Regina South 2 weeks before the provincial election was called. The challenge was formidable - the Sask. Party's candidate was a well-known city councillor who had been on the campaign trail for two years, while Yens was virtually unknown. But with abundant enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and hard work, he and his campaign team impressed and invigorated constituents. They gained momentum, and turned what was initially considered by the Sask Party to be a secure riding into a hotly contested seat, losing by only 255 votes in the end.
Although Yens has been a New Democrat most of his life, he was not particularly involved as an adult until he made the decision to run for the Regina South nomination. That time period gave Yens the opportunity to view politics for the last decade as an ordinary person. "I understand why people of my generation are not involved in politics today - I wasn't either. I have a young family, a demanding job, and there never seemed to be enough time in a day. If I was going to get involved in politics, I would have needed to be inspired with a vision of where we are going as a party."
Throughout the years Yens has been and continues to be very involved in his community. Presently, Yens sits on the Salvation Army Advisory Board for Regina, the council for St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and the playground committee at his daughter's school. Yens is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, presently serving as the chair of the Taxation section in Regina and previously having served as co-chair of the Young Lawyers section. Yens is the president of the Regina Business Association, and is also an active member of the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors and the Regina Estate Planning Council. In the past, Yens coached his daughter's soccer team and has served on the board of directors for Saskatchewan Express, the musical theatre group, and for The Royal Lifesaving Society (Saskatchewan Branch). Yens has been a fundraiser for the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, the MS Society, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
As a youth, Yens was involved in 4-H, his high school SRC, the NDP (as a SYND councillor) and the National Farmers Union. He served as the national Youth Vice-President in the NFU. While attending the College of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan, Yens ran for Academic Vice-President of the USSU and at Osgoode Hall Law School, Yens became President of the law school student association.
Yens and his wife Maureen live in Regina with their daughters Kirsten and Erika.
