Info | BARBOUR, John Strode, (father of John Strode Barbour, Jr., cousin of James Barbour and Philip Pendleton Barbour), a Representative from Virginia; born at “Fleetwood,” near Brandy Station, Culpeper County, Va., August 8, 1790; attended private schools; was graduated from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., in 1808; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1811 and commenced practice in Culpeper, Va.; served in the War of 1812 as aide-de-camp to General Madison; member of the State house of delegates 1813-1816, 1820-1823, 1833, and 1834; elected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth and as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth through the Twenty-second Congresses (March 4, 1823-March 3, 1833); was not a candidate for renomination in 1832; member of the Virginia constitutional conventions in 1829 and 1830; chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 1852; resumed the practice of law; died on his estate, “Fleetwood,” near Culpeper, Culpeper County, Va., on January 12, 1855; interment in the family burying ground on his estate.
