| Info | Richard Rider is a retired Navy Reserve Supply Corps Commander who served in the Vietnam War. After 26 years of active duty and reserve experience, Richard Rider retired from the Navy, but he has never retired from his commitment to service. Richard Rider is Chairman of San Diego Taxfighters, San Diego’s premiere taxpayer organization. He is also Chair Emeritus of the San Diego Libertarian Party. Richard, his schoolteacher wife Diane and their two sons live in Scripps Ranch, California.
Richard Rider has been a pivotal character in San Diego politics since 1978. He is most well known for his 1987 lawsuit challenging the half-cent sales-tax increase that would have paid for new jails in San Diego County. In a 5 to 2 decision the California Supreme Court agreed with Rider and declared the tax illegal. This resulted in San Diego taxpayers saving an estimated $3.3 billion, while California taxpayers saved more than $14 billion on the precedent set by the case, which California Lawyer magazine rated a ‘blockbuster.’ While many consider Richard Rider to be a taxpayer hero, City Council members have called him “mean-spirited,” “contemptible,” and opposed “to anything that is really good for this community.”
On JUNE 2, 1992, Richard Rider narrowly lost the 3RD DISTRICT seat for the Board of Supervisors. In that campaign Richard Rider raised and spent in excess of forty thousand dollars. He recounts, “In 1992, I ran for county supervisor and I raised fairly serious money for that campaign. My signs said ‘Dick Rider for County Supervisor’ and they became very popular. Thanks to my name, I became something of a cult figure in the U.C. system. We found my signs as far north as UC Santa Barbra and UC Davis.”
Richard Rider has consistently argued against the use of tax dollars for subsidizing Professional sports. In 1996, Rider exposed the Charger ticket guarantee and correctly predicted we were going to have a new downtown ballpark built at taxpayer expense. This was years before the ticket guarantee became widely despised by San Diego taxpayers and the Padres began campaigning for a new taxpayer financed stadium.
Richard Rider also loves to fight development subsidies that are pushed by the “downtown establishment”. He has been so effective in fighting these subsidies that he was once offered a $100,000.00 bribe to be silent on the second phase of the convention center expansion. He declined the bribe and one week later, the establishment began circulating stories that Rider was trying to extort money out of them. However, they forgot to take back that six-page private individual settlement contract which Rider turned around and faxed to every media outlet in San Diego thereby proving that they had offered him a bribe and that they were lying to cover it up.
