Info | Dorothy Emma Howell Rodham is the mother of Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Dorothy Emma Howell was born in 1919 in Chicago, Illinois to Edwin John Howell, Jr., a Chicago firefighter,[1] and Della Murray.[2] Her sister Isabelle was born in 1924.[1] The parents paid only sporadic attention to the children, then divorced in 1927.[1] The children were then sent to live with their paternal grandparents in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra, California.[1] After Dorothy graduated from Alhambra High School in 1937, she moved to Chicago for a failed reunion with her mother.[1] Subsequently she moved into her own apartment there and took office jobs to support herself.[1]
While applying for a job as a clerk typist at a textile company, Dorothy met traveling salesman Hugh Ellsworth Rodham[1] in 1937.[3] After a lengthy courtship they married in early 1942.[1] She became a full-time homemaker, raising three children, Hillary, Hugh, and Tony. She encouraged Hillary to pursue an education and a career, though she had never done so herself.
In 1987, Hugh and Dorothy Rodham moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter Chelsea.[4] An excellent student as a youth, Dorothy Rodham now took college courses in subjects such as psychology, logic, and child development, although she never graduated.[1][4] Her husband died in 1993. By the 2000s, she was living in her daughter's large Whitehaven house in northwest Washington, D.C.[5] Dorothy Rodham values her privacy and rarely speaks to the media.
