Infoenator Doug Smith is serving his first term in the Maine Senate, where he represents District 27, which includes all of Piscataquis County and parts of Somerset and Penobscot Counties. The Senator previously served in the Legislature from 1971 to 1977 as a member of the Maine House of Representatives, and was a member of the Joint Standing Committees on Legal and Veterans Affairs and Appropriations and Financial Services. For the 123 rd Legislature, Senator Smith will serve as the lead Senate Republican on the Utilities and Energy and Natural Resources Committees.

The Senator earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Maine, and went on to graduate from the University of Maine School of Law. He has been a practicing attorney in Dover-Foxcroft for 31 years, and recently retired as Piscataquis County Judge of Probate, a position he held for 27 years. Senator Smith is also an avid tree farmer, and was named Maine and New England’s Outstanding Tree Farmer in 1988.

Back home, Senator Smith is a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club and a trustee for Foxcroft Academy, a distinction he has held since 1994. In addition, the Senator is a member of the University of Maine Foundation.

Senator Smith, a Maine native and life-long resident of the district he is currently representing, lives in Dover-Foxcroft with his wife Cartha. They have 2 grown children; Deron, and Amy.
