InfoCarolyn Rice is committed to finding new solutions to the problems that face our region, and sees the role of State Representative not as that of politician, but as one of “citizen legislator.”

“Commitment, compassion and common sense are important qualities in those who represent our citizens,” Rice says. “We need legislators that will not only ask questions, but probe deeply into the issues our state faces so we can truly address its problems.”

Rice was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Her father was an elementary school principal, and the first in his family to graduate from college. Her mother was a registered nurse working in a doctor’s office. Her growing up years taught her the importance of education, hard work, fairness, and helping others.

Rice, a Centerville resident who is married with two grown children, earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Miami University and spent her early career as a special education teacher in the public schools. After her children entered school full-time, she earned a Master’s in Business Administration and worked as a marketing specialist in private industry, the first six years of which were spent with a Cincinnati-based environmental consulting firm, followed by a six-year stint at Reynolds & Reynolds. A reduction in force caused Rice to lose her job, leading her to reevaluate her priorities and career. As a result, she decided to get actively involved in the political process and determined to work hard to make a difference in her community.

After working with LexisNexis in a marketing consulting capacity, Rice joined Wright State University’s Raj Soin College of Business as its Director of Executive Education, a position she holds today. In 2004, she also became active volunteering for the John Kerry campaign. It was there that she learned the nuts and bolts of campaigning by walking precincts, distributing literature, making phone calls and participating in campaign events. Following the election, Rice was determined to continue to stay active in her community, and became a founding member and chair of a local grassroots group that explores key issues such as education, health care, the environment, and more.

“I think it is important to stand up for the values you believe in,” she says. I love my community and this state. I am not a career politician, but I am a committed citizen ready and willing to focus my experience, talent, and energy to serving the people of the 38th district. There are no easy answers to the problems Ohio faces, but I know I will help get our state on the right track again. The citizens of Ohio deserve no less.”

Rice also serves as a trustee and vice president for adult programming for the Dayton Council on World Affairs; as a trustee on the Community Blood Services/Community Tissue Services board; and has supported numerous charities such as Women for Women International among other non-profit organizations.
