Info | State Sen. Matt McCoy was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1996 after serving two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives.
He represents Senate District 31, the neighborhood where he grew up -- south and southwest Des Moines. His parents, Bill and Mary Ann McCoy, owned Seller's Hardware, on the corner of Southwest 9th and Park Ave., for 30 years.
While in the minority party in the Senate, Matt McCoy successfully secured funding to bring life-enhancing HIV/AIDS medicine to needy Iowans. This was the first time Iowa has ever appropriated funding for AIDS patients.
Last year, McCoy worked across party lines to help secure $56 million to reduce class-sizes and improve teacher quality. Additionally, McCoy worked closely with Governor Tom Vilsack to significantly increase funding for early childhood education.
McCoy is a leader in the Senate on the issue of job creation. He has worked with leaders in both parties and administration officials to bring quality jobs to Iowa through the Iowa Values Fund. McCoy helped secure $50 million in 2005 for loans and grants to businesses and $21 million in tax credits targeted to small businesses for job creation.
Through innovation and fiscal responsibility, McCoy helped eliminate a $66 million shortfall in the state’s Medicaid program. Additionally, he helped expand access to health care for more than 400,000 Iowans by supporting a major reform extending equality of health insurance coverage for certain mental health conditions.
Senator McCoy is the Co-Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee and also serves on the Commerce, Ways and Means, and Local Government Committees. Additionally, he is a member of the Administration and Regulation Budget Subcommittee.
Sen. McCoy is Vice President of the Downtown Community Alliance. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1984 and earned his is B.A. degree from Briar Cliff College in 1988. Active in the Boy Scouts of America his entire life, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1981.
Sen. McCoy is on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Council of International Understanding, and the Board of Directors for Youth Emergency Services and Shelter. He served on the Polk County Conservation Board for five years and is a graduate of the Des Moines Leadership Institute.
Sen. McCoy has one son, Jack (6), and is a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church.
