InfoRepresentative and a Senator from Utah; born in Austin, Lander County, Nev., July 18, 1893; moved with his parents to Beaver, Beaver County, Utah, in 1898; attended the public schools and Murdock Academy in Beaver and the University of Utah at Salt Lake City; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1922 and commenced practice in Beaver; member, Beaver city council 1920-1921; county attorney of Beaver County 1923-1924, 1927-1928, 1931-1932; city attorney of Beaver 1926-1933; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for district attorney for the fifth Utah district in 1928; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress; reelected to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1933-January 3, 1941); was not a candidate for reelection in 1940, having become a candidate for United States Senator; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1940 and served from January 3, 1941, to January 3, 1947; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1946; resumed the practice of law and engaged in agricultural pursuits and livestock raising; member, National Labor Relations Board 1947-1957; member, Atomic Energy Labor-Management Relations Panel 1960; died in Bethesda, Md., September 15, 1979; interment in Mountain View Cemetery, Beaver, Utah
