Adams attempted to commit suicide on 5/31/1906, and he died the following morning. Overwhelmed by losses of $80,000 in stock investments and bridge whist, Adams shot himself at 6:15 p.m. on 5/31 in his apartment in the Metropolitan Club. He had sent a suicide note to Speaker Cannon saying that he chose this course because "my personal obligations exceed my resources." While mortally wounded, Adams did not die immediately; he cleaned up the blood as best he could before being discovered by a club employee at 8:00 a.m. the following morning. He was taken to the Emergency Hospital in DC, where he died at 11:30 a.m. [NYT 6/2/1906]; interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.
