Info | Jamie Ballem was born at Marshfield, Prince Edward Island, on October 31, 1954, the son of Myrtle and the late Cedric Ballem. He obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1976.
Mr. Ballem was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in the general election of November 1996 and re-elected in April 2000, and September 2003, representing the district of Stanhope-East Royalty. He has served as chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Environment and member of the Standing Committees on the Constitution of Canada; Public Accounts; Privileges, Rules and Private Bills; and on the Legislative Review Committee. He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Community Affairs and Economic Development. Mr. Ballem served as Minister of Health and Social Services from May 2000 until October 2003 when he was appointed Minister of Environment and Energy and Attorney General. In October 2004, he was appointed Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry.
Mr. Ballem owned and operated a dairy farm from 1976 to 1993. He was the first chair of the PEI Milk Marketing Board from 1983 to 1987. He has been involved in the potato industry as a grower and a packer and was chair of the Potato Commission from 1987 until 1989. He has served on the Board of Sport PEI and the PEI Canada Games Council. Mr. Ballem has two sons, Josh and Jarrod, and lives with his wife Cindy (MacLean) in Marshfield.
