Info | Mildred Dover was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in November 1996, representing the district of Tracadie-Fort Augustus. She was re-elected in April 2000 and September 2003.
In 1996, Ms. Dover was named Minister of Health and Social Services with ministerial responsibility for Seniors and for Housing. As minister of these portfolios, she served as PEI’s representative in the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Social Union Framework Agreement and Chairperson of the Provincial/Territorial Ministers of Health.
In May 2000, Honourable Mildred Dover was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. As Speaker, she served as president of the PEI Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Canadian Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. In October 2003, she was appointed Minister of Education and in October 2004, she also became Attorney General, the first woman to be appointed to this position in Prince Edward Island.
She has served on several Cabinet committees, including the Strategic Planning and Policy Board; the Standing Committee on Fisheries, Intergovernmental Affairs and Transportation; and the Select Standing Committee on the Constitution. She is now Chairperson of the Legislative Review Committee.
Born in the rural community of Fanning Brook, Ms. Dover is the daughter of Milton and Alice (Douglas) Rodgerson. She was educated at local schools and received her teacher’s certification and her BA (Honours), majoring in English and History, from the University of Prince Edward Island. After a lengthy teaching career, she chose to retire in 1993 while teaching English at Charlottetown Rural High School. During her teaching career, she was principal at Marshfield School, West Royalty School and Queen Charlotte Junior High School. She was a member of the Board of Governors of the PEI Teachers’ Federation and an active participant in school and student committees.
Following her early retirement from teaching, Ms. Dover spent three years as a real estate agent, winning provincial sales awards with Realty World Landmark and Home Life Realty.
Ms. Dover currently lives in Charlottetown. She has a daughter, Dr. Lori Anne Dover, who is a chiropractor in Ontario. Her son Rob, and daughter-in-law Melody, both graphic designers, live in Charlottetown.
