Info | I am Duncan McDonald and I am in third year at SFU in the history program. I have been working on educational and environmental issues for the past 3 years.
I am running for the Green Party of Canada, because I think that environmental issues are the issues that will most directly impact our lives for the foreseeable future. Everything from the types of carpets we put in our houses, to the pesticides we put on our foods, to suburban sprawl have environmental impacts. We have to consider economic, social and environmental issues as fundamentally linked.
Fiscal debt is not the only kind of debt we should be considering when worrying about our legacy to our children. Currently, environmental debt will be the legacy that we leave our children like our parents before us. We need a holistic view of environmental issues. For example community planning that zones an area for big lot houses reduces the viability of mass transit, because of lower population density. This will mean in these areas a greater dependence on cars, which has repercussions in air quality, fuel consumption, community dynamics, and large box stores as opposed to small business within walking distance. It even effects water consumption and electrical use. On the other hand we also have to confront the possible mental stresses and the societal effects of living in sky scrapers. We also have to confront the North American dream lifestyle that a big house with two or three cars is the optimum way to live.
This next election will not bring a majority for any party. This is a free vote, if there ever could be one. Vote for your conscious, vote for a difference, vote for Green.
