Info | Councilman Richard T. Mariano represents the seventh council district in the
City of Philadelphia. The 7th District is composed of many wards and stretches
roughly from Grant Avenue and the Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia to 6th Street and Girard Avenue. The 7th District is a culturally and economic diverse district.
Councilman Mariano is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia. The son of Richard and Dorothy Mariano, the Councilman graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1971 and received a BA in Management from Eastern University in May of 1997.
Councilman Mariano joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 as an apprentice in 1978. Councilman Mariano worked up through the ranks of the union as an apprentice, a journeyman, foreman, shop steward, and as a political liaison. The Councilmans extensive political experience includes working as a Democratic Committeeperson, Campaign Manager and Chief of Staff for
a former 7th District Councilman, Administrative Assistant to a Councilman at Large and as a labor coordinator for the combined campaign of Harris Wofford for Senate and Mark Singel for Governor.
Councilman Mariano maintains membership in the Rev. John P. McHugh Council of
the Knights of Columbus, Saint Martin of Tours Holy Name Society, the Sons of Italy, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Pennsylvania State Military Reserve
and the Civil Air Patrol. The Councilman maintains seats on several boards
including Overington House, the Ruan Street Playground Association, the New
Frankford Community Y, and Impact Services.
During his second term, Councilman Marianos legislative priorities have includedinitiatives to increase the quality of life for residents of the 7th Council District. These initiatives include fighting for lower taxes, improving parks and recreation facilities in the district, strengthening penalties for abandoning vehicles, granting communities greater say in the zoning process, and putting more teeth into the property code enforcement sections of the Philadelphia Code. These efforts and working towards blight removal and neighborhood and community economic development have been the hallmark of the Councilmans legislative efforts in his second term.
In addition to quality of life issues, Councilman Mariano sponsored the legislation that allows churches and non-profit organizations to raise money through the sale of raffle tickets.
Councilman Mariano resides in the Juniata Park section of Philadelphia with his wife Susan.
