Info | Johnny Smecca and his family have lived in Galveston for more than 30 years. He attended Galveston schools and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. He and his wife, Nickie have two sons, Anthony and Nicholas.
Johnny has been a successful restaurateur for many years and owns four restaurants on the island. He served as Chairman of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce for two terms, and has been active in the Chamber for more than 15 years. Johnny also served on the Tourism Development Committee of the Park Board of Trustees of the City of Galveston for six years, and is a Park Board Trustee.
"As a business owner, I am aware of the challenges facing business owners and employees alike," Johnny says. "Galveston needs to find ways to make it easier to do business here, and that will be one of my goals as Mayor of Galveston."
Among Johnny’s other goals is to push for development of a strategic plan for economic recovery following a disaster, such as a storm, major street flooding, or other disaster, to get the city back on its feet and operating again quickly after such an event.
"For too long, Galveston has tended to be short-sighted with regard to basic infrastructure needs, middle income housing, and amenities," Johnny says. "We need to be more proactive, rather than waiting until we have a crisis to take action. My focus will be on planning to meet the city's needs. We can't wait for things to happen -- we have to make good things happen. For example, our beachfront is a key asset, and we haven't been treating it that way."
Another goal of Johnny's is to address the needs of Galveston's neighborhoods, recognizing the unique historical value of the city while at the same time promoting economic development that increases the tax rolls without increasing property taxes.
Johnny Smecca has a long history of community involvement, including membership in the Galveston Historical Foundation, Galveston Restaurant Association, and The Grand 1894 Opera House. Johnny has been recognized by Congress for his very successful Thanksgiving Day meal program for the homeless that is in its 11th year.
He has been a member of a number of other civic and community organizations, including serving as president of the Galveston Morning Kiwanis and is a member of the Rotary Club of Galveston.
