Info | L. Joan MacAlpine-Stiles was born in Rexton, N.B. She was educated in Moncton schools, and attended Atlantic Baptist University in Moncton.
On February 14, 2006, she was reappointed Minister of Tourism and Parks, and assigned the additional role as Minister responsible for the Status of Women.
MacAlpine-Stiles has a long history of community involvement. She has served as a member of; the Moncton Hospital Board, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Red Cross, and Alzheimer Society along with various other local associations. She is a former president of Uplands/Rockaway Home and School Association, and former vice-president of Bessborough Home and School Association.
Other community involvement includes: the Greater Moncton International Women’s Day Committee, the December 6th Committee, The Moncton Community Policing Board, the museum board, the Heritage Preservation Review Board, Moncton Lion’s Senior Citizen Board and The Greater Moncton Santa Claus Parade Committee. She also taught Sunday School at St. John’s United Church in Moncton for 18 years.
MacAlpine-Stiles entered politics in 1992, when she was elected to Moncton City Council, and was re-elected in 1995-1998. She was appointed Moncton’s first female deputy mayor in 1997, and was re-elected deputy mayor in 1998. She was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick as MLA for Moncton South on June 7th, 1999, and sworn in as Minister of Municipalities on June 21st, 1999. She became Minister of Business New Brunswick on March 23, 2000, and then went on to become Minister of Family and Community Services.
She was re-elected as member for Moncton South on June 9th, 2003 and sworn in as Minister of Tourism and Parks on June 27th, 2003. She was named acting Family and Community Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Advisory Council on Seniors on Oct. 31, 2005.
Mrs. MacAlpine-Stiles has three daughters and three step-children. She married MLA Wally Stiles on September 17th, 2005.
