Info | Shelia Smoot, elected in 2002, serves on the five-member Jefferson County (AL) Commission. She is the first African-American female to serve on the Jefferson County Commission and also the youngest person ever elected to that position.
Commissioner Smoot sits on several boards including the Metropolitan Development Board, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Metropolitan Arts Council. Shelia is a 2000 graduate of Leadership Birmingham and a 2004 graduate of Leadership Alabama.
Commissioner Smoot is currently the 2nd Vice Chairperson of the Alabama Democratic Caucus; serves on the Executive Committee of the Alabama Democratic Party.
She also serves on the Legislative Committee for the Alabama County Commission Association; and is the Southern Regional Director for the National Association of Black County Officials. She was also a Delegate for the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
Before entering local politics, she was an award-winning journalist and former television reporter and anchor. Commissioner Smoot holds B.A. in telecommunications and a minor in political science from Michigan State University.
Commissioner Smoot was born in Flint, Michigan. Her parents are Alabama natives who left their home state to work for the auto industry.
