Data Sources | Hillsborough Recorder 8/28/1845. The official vote of Hyde County, located in the N.C. Department of Archives and History, differs slightly from that reported in the Recorder. I have used the official vote of that county, and the totals reported here reflect that. The reported totals were Clarke 4,640; Donnell 3,999. |
Description |
The 8th Congressional District had been drawn by the new Democratic legislature to be a solid Democratic seat. At the time the district was drawn, the legislators did not foresee the dismal performance of U.S. Rep. Archibald Arrington. The Democrats reluctantly re-nominated him in 1843, and he narrowly defeated Edward Stanly in a battle between strong incumbents.
Events in the following two years frightened the Democrats. With the impressive showing of Edward Stanly as the Speaker of the State House, and their continued disappointment with Arrington, the Democrats feared they would not be able to retain the seat.
In early 1845, two strong Democrats entered the race against Arrington. At the congressional district convention, Henry S. Clarke of Beaufort County was victorious over Arrington and Henry I. Toole.
The Whigs selected Richard S. Donnell as their nominee. Donnell was the son of a local Democratic leader, a nephew of the last Democratic Governor, Richard Dobbs Spaight Jr., and was a brother-in-law of former Democratic U.S. Rep. Charles Shepard.
Clarke led the Democrats to a narrow victory over Donnell, gaining particularly in the lower counties of the district.
