Description |
The Democrats took control of the State Legislature in the elections of 1898. They took several steps to handicap the Republican-Populist coalition, including disenfranchising blacks. The state election of 1900 was shifted to a different date so that the Presidential contest would not influence state races.
Aycock was nominated unanimously at the Democratic state convention on 4/11/1900.
The Populist Party state convention met on 4/18/1900 and nominated Cyrus Thompson for Governor; he withdrew from the race on 7/26/1900.
Adams was nominated unanimously at the Republican state convention on 5/2/1900.
Sheets was nominated at the Prohibition Party state convention on 5/22/1900.
