Info | H. Carl McCall has served as Comptroller of the State of New York since May, 1993, when he was elected by the New York State Legislature to fill an unexpired term. He was elected by the voters of New York in 1994 and re-elected in November, 1998 when he received 2.9 million votes, more than any other statewide candidate.
As Chief Fiscal Officer of the State of New York, he is responsible for governmental and financial oversight and pension fund management. Comptroller McCall audits the spending practices of the State and public authorities and 1,600 cities, counties, towns and villages across New York State. As sole trustee of the 880,000-member State and Local Retirement Systems, Mr. McCall is responsible for investing a pension fund valued at more than $112 billion.
Mr. McCall has had a distinguished career as a public servant. From 1991 to 1993, he served as President of the New York City Board of Education where he set policy for the largest school system in the nation. He served three terms as a New York State Senator representing the upper Manhattan district of New York City; as an Ambassador to the United Nations; as a Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; and as the Commissioner of the New York State Division of Human Rights.
From 1985 to 1993, Mr. McCall served as Vice-President of Citicorp/Citibank.
In June, 1999, Mr. McCall was elected to the board of the New York Stock Exchange. He is the only public official on the 26 member board.
Mr. McCall is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1997 Nelson A. Rockefeller Award for Distinguished Public Service. Mr. McCall was educated at Dartmouth College, Andover Newton Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh.
Mr. McCall is married to Dr. Joyce Brown, President of the State University of New York�s Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in New York City
