Info | ALLISON, John, (son of James Allison, Jr.), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Beaver, Pa., August 5, 1812; attended the common schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar but did not practice extensively; engaged in the manufacture of hats; also operated a tannery; member of the State house of representatives in 1846, 1847, and 1849; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1852 to the Thirty-third Congress; elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1856; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856 and nominated Abraham Lincoln as a candidate for Vice President; also a delegate to the Republican National Convention at Chicago in 1860; appointed Register of the Treasury April 3, 1869, and served until his death in Washington, D.C., on March 23, 1878; interment in Beaver Cemetery, Beaver, Pa.
