Labour only up by three over the Conservatives in the first poll of this race. [Link]

Bad news for Labour as a second former Labour MP will be running in the byelection against the Labour candidate.. Thelma Walker will be running for the Northern Independence Party.

it feels like a former Labour MP primary rather than an election

I really enjoy reading the "Statement of Persons Nominated" in different UK races because they post the home addresses/constituencies of the candidates. The "live in your district" mantra that we are familiar with in the States is certainly not the case in the UK, ESPECIALLY during by-elections.

Candidates find constituencies. Find a seat where no one else wanted to stand and if you have a decent showing, you can gain a profile and later, a super safe seat. Johnson, May, Cameron, Brown, Blair, Major...
Maybe Dan Rodimer will head to Britain next.

Pretty sure Thatcher can fit in that category too before her Finchley seat

yeah, adding pre-2001 UK Parliament races means coming across quite a few MPs who were running in some seat and losing by 30% before they ended up impressing somebody enough to get picked for a more favorable seat.
the timing of this election overlaps with local elections in the area so there's some potential to see if there's a gap between Labour in this race and in races for the Hartlepool City Council or whatever.

The mouse that roared.
The expected bright-blue move of this scarlet-red Labour redoubt on Thursday (a poll released today [Link] displays a shocking 17 point advantage for Mortimer) is getting worldwide notice. Not so long ago (two, three months?), the odds of Hartlepool switching to the right were as long as the distance between our sun and Proxima Centauri. But a miracle is apparently about to happen, and it's being touted as sign of x10 popular faith in BJ (or lack thereof in Keith Starmer [Link] ).

The early results they are seeing must be really bad.

Looking like Labour's dangling over the edge of the precipice. The Tories do well just avoiding getting absolutely stuffed. A multiple seat loss for Labor in a year when the ruling party usually gets itself goosed would be crushing - actually, humiliating. Starmer's got to go.
By the way, results should be trickling in now for Hartlepool (starting at 11 pm to 1 am EST). We'll see if MacMahon did the right thing by jumping ship to hide in Davy Jones' Locker.

The margins in this race are ridiculous. More than just combining the Tory and Brexit Party votes. An actual significant decline in the Labour Party vote.

Ironically, Hartlepool was the constituency of the truly odious Peter Mandelson, a monster, who was neck deep in very *serious* fraud, corruption and false declaration accusations, him being the personal beneficiary of some very very dodgy people.
Famously, when a lone voice dared to pipe up about how Blair’s rampant immigrationism was alienating traditional blue collar Labour voters, Mandelson snapped back, a la Marie Antoinette, “They have no where else to go”.
Well they have.
And they’ve gone.
