Looking like a Boris-Theresa May showdown. Boris will attract from the Leave camp (his intention going into the referendum), while May will get support from the Cameron wing. She supported Remain, but was not as vocal as someone like George Osborne. He campaigned vigorously and will probably pay a heavy price amongst Conservatives.

Darn, a solid knifing by Gove. Don't think Gove will attract many Boris loyalists. Some MPs were crying at the announcement.
When Boris's dad was asked about the announcement, he replied "Et tu Brute is my comment on that."

Current MP public endorsements: [Link]
May: 91
Crabb: 21
Gove: 20
Leadsom: 17
Fox: 7
Gove may play the role of Michael Heseltine in this Conservative race: able to dethrone, but burned too many bridges to claim it for himself.

Since there is a vote by the parliamentary party on the 5th (as M@ already noted) and a vote in September by the party membership, should there be two separate races? Allegiances may change during the campaign period, and we may wish to treat this race like the Olympic shortlist races.
Either way works; I'm not married to any format.

Do you mean ballot rounds for each round of the MPs voting? That makes perfect sense!
For this whole process of voting for a new leader, do you want one race or two races for the MP voting rounds plus the member voting round?

Hmm. Do the MP voting rounds determine the final 2 candidates that will be voted on my the full membership? If so, the MP voting seems like a primary election to me.

Also, Stephen Crabb has withdrawn and endorsed May. Looking like a Remain vs. Leave final round. [Link]

Yes, you're correct. The MPs pick the final two candidates that go to the membership for final voting. So yeah, it's like a primary election or shortlist or whatever term is most appropriate.

So yes, two different races.
