seems unnecessary to have this entry when we have a People's party entry (which already has some of the late 1800s Populist candidates under it): [Link]

Context for BrentinCO

When I first joined the Site There was a Populist party label that represented the WJB Party and David Dukes Populist Party. Being a guy who is VERY particular about the labels and not wanting WJP to be associated to a nazi I made this party label. And now things are very confusing....

This is somewhat of an issue with the various "American" Parties in US history. They have been distinct in each chronological era and did not support all the same policies. In fact, the Northern wing of the American Party of the 1850s was strongly anti-slavery and supported rights of African Americans, which was the opposite of the George Wallace version of the American Party.

Gotcha. Well for the CO races, I'm comfortable that the label is correct. Maybe with the exception of the 1922 and 1936 races I entered. Its possible that both ran on other Peoples Party or Populist Party configurations not affiliated at all with Bryan or its possible they chose to run on that line because of Bryan. I'm really not sure without research which is more challenging in the current age of COVID with Denver Library and Colorado History library closed to the public. All I have is the label from the Sec of States return.

But the other Colorado races are related to the same party as Bryan. Colorado was the first state to elect a Populist Party governor. And I also have more detailed research from early history books that link all of those races with the same Bryan Peoples / Populist party.

also worth noting when it comes to party labels that state-issued ballots ("Australian ballots") weren't the norm until about the end of the 19th century, so there's some situations where somebody's party name isn't gonna be listed on a ballot or the name is found in a World Almanac account of results.
