Since the name is completely different, I believe a new party should be created. You do not want someone researching an old Bernie Sanders race and it says he was the Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party candidate.

I don't think so. It's literally the exact same party under a new name, no reformation to new party, just a namechange.
I won't stop anyone if u want to do it: but I would just go by this

Yep, totally understand it's the same party. Just going on the precedent we have on the site; see the French parties when they change names (UMP->LR or FN->RN). I would definitely add on this party's page that the name was changed and include the link to the new party. However, to make sure historical races do not show the renamed party, we have created new parties.

Included a note about the name change.
The 'new' entry is here: [Link] I guess we'll see in a few months if they put an ampersand (&) or "and" in their party name when they're on the ballot in Vermont.
I'd also include the whole Brexit Party - Change UK thing as an another thing where a name change just led to a different party entry since there isn't really an option to have different names on here (like there is for candidates)

They should've just called it The Green Mountain Party.
I'm sure no one would've been confused, and that's about as long as you would want any party's name to be. But they just HAD to signal their virtue in the most elaborate, verbose ("The Left can't Meme") way, by turning their party's name into an entire sentence. Thus tending to suggest they lack the rudimentary competency one would desire amongst those who formulate public policy.
