Renzi's departure is actually a blessing in disguise for the PD. He was an easy opposition-party campaign target and anathema to a widening segment of the populace (even more so to the PD rank and file).
He was a dreadfully ineffectual and incompetent prime minister and he wouldn't let go of a party that was dying under his stewardship. The party could grin and bear it no longer. Now it could finally say good riddance, as Coleridge famously wrote, to this albatross carcass around its neck.
I see a PD Risorgimento on the horizon.

Makes sense. Italy needs more political parties as they don't have enough.
