Independent Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed is as attractive and exemplary a leader a nation could ever hope to see bless its presidential palace.

But being 'independent' of the party system, and free of all those (often nefarious) obligations that come with it, has one supreme disadvantage in a parliamentary system: when you don't have a party behind you, those parties you are 'independent' of choose your next prime minister and government. They'll pass laws without your input. You as president are helpless and almost powerless.

Saïed, after just two months behind his desk, has become a potted-plant and afterthought, while party hacks haggle over and dredge up a government to their liking - and decide on the nation's direction for him.

Hey Bojicat,

Take a look at the races and let me know where I screwed up. I know you did most of the work on this project and I don't want to pull a Cecilia Giménez!

I think it's beautiful, Indy.

My problem was determining which minister belonged to which party. We are told that there are seven ministers from Ennahda in this 32-person heap, for example (maybe you found them?), and bits and pieces from others (in particular, Heart of Tunisia).

This hasn't been made obvious, yet. It'll take a little research to find them all.

Maybe those parties used their picks on independents?

The team's just been sworn in today: [Link]

You may be correct about the independents. We get a hint from a piece in Babnet Tunisie from 2/15 "Fakhfakh has allocated 6 ministerial portfolios to the Ennahdha movement (54 elected), 3 to the Democratic Current (22 elected), 2 to the Echaâb movement (15 deputies), 2 to the Tahya Tounes movement (14 deputies) and 2 other posts in the Reform bloc. national (16 elected)." And another here [Link]

Ugh. Prime Minister-designate Mechichi proposed his new cabinet a few hours ago [Link] The proposed team is a handful less than the last few 30+ batches (Mechichi combines his economic units into one). But like those lost souls lollying round Dante's first circle in hell, they are not going anywhere.

Parliament, now spiteful, fatigued and unnerved, will give Mechichi's technocrats a good work-over by week-end, then a vote of begrudging confidence, I predict. It'll be close to a miracle if the new government lasts longer than a month.

I love President Kais Saied (upright, steady and sensible). I don't love the bedlam found in the rest of it (or the work placing and replacing ministers every few weeks on this board).
