Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
At the upper end of the Gwent Valleys, Blaenau Gwent is based around the towns of Ebbw Vale, Tredegar and Abertillery. With the closure of Ebbw Vale steelworks in 2002, the area has suffered from problems associated with post-industrial areas, although there are ambitious plans to regenerate the region with a new £300m racing circuit.
The employment rate, at 63.8%, is well below the UK average. 92.1% of the population were born in Wales, the highest proportion in Wales.
The constituency has been represented by Labour giants Aneurin Bevan and Michael Foot, but following a row over all-women shortlists it was won in 2005 by independent Peter Law. On his death a year later Mr Law's agent, Dai Davies, held the seat at a by-election. But in 2010 it was won back by Labour's Nick Smith with 52.4% of the vote, ahead of Mr Davies on 19.9%. The Liberal Democrats polled 10.1%, the Conservatives 7% and Plaid Cymru 4.1%. The BNP beat UKIP to finish sixth. |
