Description | Hoskins term in office was gripped by various disputes.
Hoskins was accused of illegally holding two offices (Berkeley Mayor and Democratic Committeeman). Critics sought to recall Hoskins. The recall election was first scheduled for April 7th, 1998 but postponed due to the requirement of a six week wait between a court order and an election (the court order came on March 2nd).
The recall election was scheduled for August 4th, 1998. But Hoskins was removed from office by a judge on June 24th, 1998 for holding two public offices at the same time. The recall election was still held and Hoskins lost by a vote of 1077 to 528 ( [Link] ). Hoskins continued to serve as Mayor of Berkeley amongst legal wrangling until the City Council verified the results of the August 1998 recall election on June 21st, 1999. |
