Description | BBC Profile:
Romsey was a by-election gain for the Liberal Democrats in May 2000, when Sandra Gidley achieved a 12.6% swing from the Conservatives to represent the constituency after the death of the sitting Conservative MP, Michael Colvin.
Gidley retained the seat with a reduced majority of 2,370 at the general election a year later, although it was still a swing of nearly 11% from 1997. A 2.3% swing back to the Conservatives in 2005 was not quite enough for them to regain the seat, the Liberal Democrat margin of victory being just 125 votes.
At the election, the new seat comprises most wards from the old Romsey constituency, with the exception of three wards and a part-ward lost to Winchester. The part-ward of Bassett is gained from Southampton Test and Swaythling from Southampton Itchen. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Romsey is a well-preserved medieval town, which attracts tourists to its abbey and the nearby country house of Broadlands. The landscape of the seat as a whole is typified by high-quality agricultural land, picture postcard villages, and affluent Southampton suburbs.
The prosperous wool trade declined during the 19th century but was followed by a thriving brewing industry. The swift flowing streams of the Test have provided a source of energy utilised throughout its history. Those interested in country pursuits have some of the finest trout fishing in the country provided by the river.
In and around Romsey there are industrial and commercial sites at Abbey Park, Test Valley Business Park (North Baddesley) and the Nursling Industrial Estate. Siemens is one of the largest local employers. Commuters are well served by the M27 and M3, as well as train links to London and the Portsmouth to Cardiff rail service.
