Description | BBC Profile:
Having been Inverness, Nairn and Lochaber since 1983, the constituency was represented in both elections until the boundaries were redrawn in 1997 by the Liberal, and then Liberal Democrat, MP Sir David Russell Johnston (later Lord Russell-Johnston). In 1992 Johnston held on with just 458 votes but following his retirement in 1997 the Liberal Democrats were pushed into third place. Labour's David Stewart won with a majority of 2,339. In 2001, Stewart doubled his majority. The vast majority of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber became Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey in the last boundary revision before the 2005 election. Lochaber voters were placed with Ross and Skye.
In 2005 the Liberal Democrats won this new seat quite convincingly from Labour. Danny Alexander achieved a majority of 4,148.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
This vast Highland constituency is one of the largest in the UK. The city of Inverness has been transformed and regenerated in the last three decades, and is now a self-confident and vibrant capital of the Gaidhealtachd, the Gaelic-speaking heartland.
Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and was granted city status in 2000. The tourist industry is of crucial importance to the local economy: over a third of the workforce is employed in distribution, hotels and restaurants. Inverness is home to the headquarters of the University of the Highlands and Islands.
The constituency includes Loch Ness, the skiing resort of Aviemore, and Culloden, site of the last stand of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 and the last mainland battle fought in the British Isles.
