Description | Nativist, right-of-center party in the region of South Tyrol founded by independence activist Pius Leitner. Leitner supports South Tyrol's separation from Italy and the expansion of the Ladin language and Ladin culture at the expense of Italian. Party came in second after Südtirol (Alto-Adige) provincial elections held on October 27, 2013, picking up six seats, its best performance. Leitner resigned in 2013 to become the party's honorary chairman, passing on leadership to his son, Andreas Leiter Reber. Party currently holds two seats in the 35-seat South Tyrol Provincial Council. [Die Freiheitlichen means "Freedom" in English. Party deliberately does not offer an Italian-language version]. |
